Jacqueline

  May 2000

This is "Jacqueline", a loose footed, gaff rigged Harwich Bawley.
She is 35 feet on deck, and was built by Frost and Drake at Tollesbury, Essex in 1949 as a motor fishing boat before being converted to sail 1991.
The photo on the left was taken by her previous owners. Since then she has been completely stripped back to her bare timbers on the outside and refinished in a new livery of cream and green by her owner David Moss and myself. Her interior has also been refurbished, echoing her exterior colour scheme.

This set of images show the final stages of refurbishment, her suspended in the cradle and finally in the water just after launching on Saturday 15th April 2000.

From start to finish, she was ashore for just 22 weeks.

The images below show Jacqueline under sail in the River Crouch over the Easter Weekend 2000

  January 2001

Although we entered a number of the Smack & Barge races last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, it soon became apparent that being a bawley, Jacqueline was never going to gives us the chance of being up near the front of the pack. As fond of her as we were, we have been bitten by the racing bug and so the decision was made to sell her and aquire a Smack, as these are generally, the faster craft.

We have since found Jacqueline a new owner and he will be sailing her round to Devon in the spring where she will cruise the River Dart.

For our part, we have become the custodians of the 1894, Aldous built Essex Smack "Fashion"
